Dear Students and Parents,
I want to take a moment to discuss an important update regarding our school’s approach to traffic violations and the implementation of a new system aimed at promoting safe driving practices. As part of the commitment to ensuring the safety of all students and staff, we are introducing a new set of rules and consequences for traffic violations occurring on campus. This system is designed not only to hold individuals accountable for their actions, but to foster a culture of responsibility and awareness when it comes to driving.
**I am asking you to please leave the main lot free and clear when you are walking to and from your vehicles as this will cut down on the chances of you as a pedestrian getting hit by not being seen from a driver backing out of their parking spot. Please use the walkway by the fence or the walkway in between the parking lots. (Unless you are unable to use the sidewalk/walk way area due to crutches, etc.)
Key aspects of the new system include:
Traffic Violations: Specific consequences will be implemented for various traffic violations including, but not limited to the following: Speeding, Squealing/Screeching of Tires, Improper Backing, Failure to Signal, Obstructed Windows (snow, ice, other), No Seatbelt, Cellphone Use, Careless, reckless or negligent operation, etc.
Drivers: please check your mirrors when reversing, and look both ways
Do not rely on just your back up camera and remember you are in a speed zone.
1. Clear Consequences:
Red Card: If you receive a Red Card this means you violated a traffic offense while on school grounds. In lieu of a traffic citation, a Red Card is implemented and means you will not be allowed to leave for lunch the next school day and you are to remain on the school grounds, this does not mean leave with a friend. You must check in at the cafeteria.
Multiple Red Cards could cause you to not be allowed to drive to school.
2. Educational Opportunity: In addition to consequences / Red Card – I will offer educational resources aimed at reinforcing safe driving habits and understanding the importance of adhering to traffic laws. If you receive a warning card, you must come see me so we can review and go over the traffic violation so you can work on safe driving habits.
We understand change is hard, but we are asking you to be more cautious and aware of your driving behavior, as there have been Multiple Occasions where a traffic accident could have occurred, but due to the other driver using good driving skills, an accident was prevented.
This new system will be implemented effective 11/25/2024.
We believe that by working together we can create a safer environment for everyone on campus.
Sincerely,
Officer Brandy Smith (SRO)
Arcola School Dist. #306
