As part of their unit on Anne Frank and the Holocaust, Mrs. Tennill's 7th grade ELA classes read the poem "The Butterfly" by Pavel Friedmann, a child living in the Theresienstadt ghetto who was later killed in Auschwitz. Because of this poem, and others written by other victims, butterflies (which traditionally represent purity and innocence) have become the symbol of the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust.
Students were each given the name of a child that was a victim of the Holocaust. The students researched their child to learn their story and about their fate. They then made their own butterflies as memorials to the lives of their children.
